Furious small business owner says Aldi ‘ripped off’ £100 product for a quarter of the price

A woman has been left angry after claiming her designs for a picnic blanket were ripped off by supermarket giant Aldi and then sold them for a quarter of the price. Sharnee Thorpe, who started Wandering Folk in December 2015, says she was close to tears when a customer spotted the cheaper “dupes” and told her.

She sells her picnic rugs, based on hand-drawn designs, in Australia for AUD190 (£100), but new Aldi rugs are on the market for just $49.99 (£26.50), reports the Daily Star. In a moving video, she says: “After seven years of blood, sweat and tears, this truly breaks my heart.

The businesswoman says the drawings are similar

“Aldi has released a picnic rug that appears to be inspired by Wandering Folk. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do but educate everyone to always support creatives.”

The Wandering Folk and Aldi picnic mats have several details in common, such as a woven carry strap and tassels at each corner. On the other hand, the prints are not identical in the examples shown by Sharnee, although they are both floral and vintage-inspired with a border.

She adds: “Big retailers will always be looking for boutique brands to follow and I just want to remind you all that the creatives behind the brands work so hard to bring their idea to life and it really is like a stab in the heart. when you see it happen.

“Thank you to our amazing community for your support and for showing how much you care about our brand, it truly means the world to us.”

An Aldi spokeswoman told news.com.au she had received correspondence from Wandering Folk. “We will certainly review any correspondence shared with our company and respond accordingly,” she said.

Aldi recently went to war with Marks and Spencer over its Cuthbert the Caterpillar cakes – similar to Colin the Caterpillar – and the retailers have agreed to a settlement.
