The “Magic” Pro Tour can help sales of older sealed products; Small publishers fall

TCGplayer has released their March 2022 data for sealed TCG products sold on their site along with the price changes for those products. This recently released data may have indicated a few trends forming in the TCG market.

This time on the chart (see “TCGplayer Top 25 Sealed TCG Products”), Magic: The Gathering could have entered what could be the very beginning of an upward trend in sales of their Standard sealed products. One thing that stands out clearly from this list is that the Kaldheim collector booster display reached 6th place on the chart and their value barely increased (from $157.91 to $158.09). This set is over a year old (see “‘Magic: The Gathering’ ‘Kaldheim'”) and the very small increase in value indicates that a large quantity of this product may have changed hands in a short time before the price cannot adjust upwards to meet demand.

So why Kaldhiem?

Kaldhiem, in addition to having some solid Commander maps, features the cycle of Pathway lands that make up much of the legal Pioneer and Standard land base. WotC recently announced that Magic: The Gathering The Pro Tour will return and feature FLGS Regional Qualifier Tabletop Events (see “Tabletop Events”). The first regional championships will feature Pioneer events (see “‘Magic: The Gathering'”), a format that was launched in 2019 and then more or less derailed, as far as tabletop play goes, by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, with regional championships coming up and the return of OP to stores, competitive players will likely need to go back and get some of the Pioneer base cards they missed from 2020-2022 to use in-game. on table. the Kaldheim Collector Booster Displays offer great value in this regard, as this product contains the fully illustrated Pathway lands along with the added bonus of being able to remove Vorinclex, Goldspan Dragon or some of the gods from the packs. However, the recent massive purchases of Kaldhiem products are perhaps just the tip of the proverbial iceberg of this rising sales trend. Ikiora, Battle for Zendikarand Crimson Wish all have solid Pioneer cards and could be next acquisition targets for older sealed products.

On another note, the March Seal Sales chart had a significant lack of smaller publishers. WotC, Bandai, Konami and The Pokemon Company International topped the chart from top to bottom. This indicates one of two things that happened here. One possibility is that smaller publishers didn’t have too many new releases in March, as is the case with Legend Story Studios which released its big Q1 product in February (see “‘Everfest'”). The other possibility is that consumers are consolidating their spending behind older TCG titles and taking less risk buying newer games. April and May will provide a better indicator of the health of smaller games in the TCG market, as this is traditionally when consumers get their tax returns and spend a bit more.
